Find an Organization in Your Area

Finding an organization in your community with a particular area of focus will depend on one’s perspective. Being a first responder, emergency preparedness professional, business owner, medical professional, community activist, educator, individual with a disability, or any combination of these will determine where to start first. Armed with information found elsewhere in this Resource Center, people wishing to pioneer a disability-related emergency preparedness initiative in their respective communities may identify local chapters or affiliates closest to one’s place of work or residence.

The following web sites provide starting points for individuals to connect with local disability organizations.

  • National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities
    Each state has a Council on Developmental Disabilities that serves children and adults who have the medical conditions of cerebral palsy, mental retardation, epilepsy, autism, Down Syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, or other such disabilities.  These councils are organized into the National Association, and each council is tied to local service provider organizations and self-advocacy groups led by people with developmental disabilities.
  • National Association for the Mentally Ill
    People with psychiatric disabilities such as major depression, bipolar, anxiety-related disabilities, Disassociative Identity Disorder, and schizophrenia are often served by affiliates of the National Association for the Mentally Ill, which has offices around the country and which has working relationships with organizations founded and run by people with psychiatric disabilities.
  • Disaster Preparedness for People with Disabilities
    National Organization on Disability's resources on websites, articles, checklists, and training programs. Many of the sites are listed in this guide as well.
  • State Offices and Agencies of Emergency Management
    U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) list of all the state emergency management agencies and their website addresses.
